At First Glance, we provide a free, midwifery-led, non-formal first-trimester (6 to 12 weeks of pregnancy) ultrasound scanning service designed to support and reassure women in early pregnancy. Delivered by experienced midwives working within an extended scope of practice, with training through the Australian Institute of Ultrasound Pregnancy Course, our scans offer early confirmation of pregnancy, assist with establishing an estimated due date, and provide timely reassurance during a period that can feel both exciting and uncertain.

 

Our service does not replace formal diagnostic ultrasound. Instead, it complements routine maternity care by using ultrasound as a supportive clinical tool. Where appropriate, we help confirm an intrauterine pregnancy, assess early fetal development, and support informed decision-making in partnership with each woman and her wider maternity care team.

 

First Glance is grounded in continuity of care, clinical expertise, and compassionate support. We understand that early pregnancy can raise many questions, and our focus is on providing clear information, emotional reassurance, and respectful care in a calm and welcoming environment — at no cost to the woman where eligibility criteria are met.

 

Midwives providing this service have undertaken specialised ultrasound education informed by recognised professional guidelines, supporting the safe and effective use of ultrasound in clinical practice, including guidance from the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM), the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), and the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG).

 

Eligibility:
This free service is available to women who are eligible for publicly funded maternity care in New Zealand, including New Zealand residents and others who meet Ministry of Health eligibility criteria. Charges may apply for women who do not meet these eligibility requirements. Proof of eligibility may be requested at the time of appointment.
